CNC Quality Reports: What You Should Get

This article is part of the CNC Tolerances & Quality Control Guide: GD&T, CMM, Cpk, PPAP on CNX Precision.

A CNC quality report tells you whether your parts meet the drawing. It shows measured values, tolerances, and inspection results. Without one, you cannot verify the supplier’s work. Therefore, every order should include a clear report. This guide explains what a CNC quality report should contain and when to ask for more.

Reports also protect you after delivery. If a customer complains, you have the data to respond. If an audit arrives, you can show the records. In addition, good reports improve your next order. They show which supplier measures carefully. Therefore, treat the report as part of the product, not an extra.

What Is a CNC Quality Report?

A quality report is the record of your inspection. It compares each critical dimension with the drawing. It lists the measuring tool, the operator, and the date. In short, it proves that the parts left the factory as tested. A complete CNC quality report also identifies the batch or heat of material used.

Different projects need different reports. For example, a prototype may only need a first article report. A production batch may need a batch report plus a material certificate. In addition, regulated industries often ask for a full PPAP package. As a result, clarify the report level before you approve the quotation.

Every report follows a simple logic. It starts with the drawing details. Then it shows the measured values. Finally, it states the pass or fail result. In addition, it records the method and the tool. This context matters when numbers disagree. For example, two tools can produce slightly different readings. Therefore, the report should name the instrument.

First Article Inspection Reports

The first article inspection, or FAI, checks the first good part. This report verifies every dimension on the drawing. It is the most detailed CNC quality report you can receive for a new part. In practice, we measure features with CMM, calipers, micrometers, and gauges.

  • Drawing number and revision level
  • Measured value and nominal value for each dimension
  • Upper and lower tolerance limits
  • Pass or fail result for every checked feature
  • CMM inspection points and probing results
  • Surface finish readings where specified
  • Inspector name, date, and sign-off

The FAI confirms that your process and tooling are correct. For this reason, we always run it before mass production. If any dimension fails, we adjust the setup and measure again. Consequently, the first article becomes the reference for the whole order.

GD&T adds another layer to the first article. Features like flatness, position, and runout need special measurement. In many cases, a CMM is the right tool. In other cases, we use gauges or optical comparators. Each method has a place. Consequently, our FAI report lists the method for every feature. This detail builds trust with your quality team.

Batch and Lot Reports

Batch reports verify the rest of the production run. They sample parts from each lot and record key dimensions. The sample size depends on the quantity and the drawing requirements. For example, we may check every part for critical holes. For other features, we sample at regular intervals. In short, every production run ships with a batch-level CNC quality report.

Report type What it covers When you need it
First article report All dimensions of the first part New part or new process
Batch report Key dimensions across the lot Every production run
Material certificate Raw material traceability Critical and regulated parts
Full PPAP package Process, capability, and documents Automotive and aerospace

In addition, we keep records for a defined period. This archive lets you trace any issue later. If a part fails in the field, we can review the original measurements. As a result, root cause analysis becomes faster and more accurate.

Sampling follows accepted standards. For example, many projects use AQL tables for inspection. Critical dimensions may get 100 percent checks. Non-critical features follow the sample plan. In addition, we track the first and last part of each run. This data shows process stability. Therefore, trends appear before parts fail.

Reports We Ship With Every Order

At CNX Precision, every shipment includes a clear inspection record. Our standard package has three documents. First, the packing list shows what we sent. Second, the CNC quality report lists the measured results. Third, the material certificate covers the raw material when required. You receive these files by email with the tracking number.

In practice, our QC team prepares the reports during production, not after. This timing keeps the data honest and complete. Furthermore, you can request additional records at no extra planning. For example, we can add CMM data, photos of parts, or a video of the run. Just tell us what your customer needs.

We can also share process control data. For example, we record dimensions over time in a chart. This chart shows the trend of the run. In addition, we can include machine numbers and operators. Such records help you audit the process, not just the parts. For this reason, ask for the level of detail you need.

CNC Quality Report FAQ

Do you provide a CNC quality report for prototypes?

Yes, every prototype order includes a first article report. The prototype CNC quality report shows all measured values. You can review the results before you approve production. In addition, we can adjust the process based on the data. As a result, the production run starts from a proven design. This step saves both time and money.

Which tools do you use for inspection?

We use coordinate measuring machines, calipers, micrometers, and pin gauges. For surface finish, we use profilometers. For special features, we may add optical or laser inspection. Each tool is calibrated and traceable to standards. In addition, we record the calibration dates in the report. Therefore, the numbers in your document are reliable.

Can I request a sample report before ordering?

Yes, we can share a sample CNC quality report on request. It shows the format, the fields, and the level of detail. This way, you can check that it matches your customer’s expectations. In addition, we can adjust the template for your system. Contact our team and we will send you an example.

Demand Complete Inspection Data

Never accept parts without data. Ask your supplier for a CNC quality report on every shipment. Check the drawing number, the revision, and the pass results. If something looks missing, ask before you pay. Good suppliers welcome the question. At CNX Precision, complete reports are part of the standard service. Send us your drawings today and request full inspection documentation with your quote.

Finally, keep your reports organized. Save them with the purchase order and the drawings. Share them with your own QC team. In addition, update them when the design changes. This habit makes every future order easier. As a result, you build a complete record for each product.
